A new nation was created after the American colonies defeated the British army on the battlefield. Upon the military victory the several sovereign states were recognized internationally as an independent nation.
What is not common knowledge is that the colonies functioned in peace and under common-law for 170 years. It wasn’t until Britain decided to tax the colonies for the cost of defending them against the French in 1765 that the conflict escalated into the Revolutionary War.
